This Tech Changed F1 Forever | Pneumatic Valve Springs Explained!
Modern Formula 1 engines are engineering marvels that can produce over 1,000 horsepower from just 1.6 liters of displacement. Relying on technologies such as turbocharging, and a hybrid-electric powertrain (MGU-H and MGU-K), another fascinating element of these engines is their lack of traditional valve springs. First introduced by Renault in the Lotus 98T driven by Ayrton Senna and Johnny Dumfries, pneumatic valve springs have allowed F1 engines to rev higher, make more power, and are still in use today. In this video, we’ll explore why they were invented, how they work, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of their use.

The Jaguar XJ220 was widely regarded as one of the most impressive supercars upon its release in 1992 and quickly became a collector car with less than 300 produced. But did you know that 12 of them were prepared by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, then crashed together like beater cars in a racing series produced for TV by ESPN?! Fast Masters was a racing series unlike anything you’ve ever seen. $750k c...

Now a globally renowned performance division and race team, Toyota Gazoo Racing’s origins probably aren’t what you’d expect. After enjoying success in the 90s in touring car racing and rally with legendary models like the Celica and Supra, Toyota seemingly faded to black in the racing scene. The cars became boring, and the excitement was gone. Or so we thought. Thanks to a secret project that s...

Ever hear of a Volvo 850 Estate (wagon) being used as a race car? Didn’t think so! 1994’s British Touring Car Championship saw two of the most unique cars ever entered when Volvo hatched a brilliant marketing scheme! But the 850 Estate touring car was more than a gimmick. Legendary race team Tom Walkinshaw Racing came up with some of the most devious and clever engineering to get around the ult...

In many motorsports, victory can be decided by fractions of a second gained or lost during a pit stop. Pit stops involve talented athletes and mechanics who appear to effortlessly lift a car, change tires, and refuel in the blink of an eye. It’s a lot to take in, and many people don’t even consider the complexity of the specialized tools used to service a race car. This video explains the mecha...

Group 5 Special Production was a class of circuit racing introduced by the FIA in 1976. The limited regulations (less than 2.5 pages worth!) lead to some of the craziest race cars of all time, including the Porsche 935/78 (aka Moby Dick), the Ford Zakspeed Capri Turbo, and the Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo. Often dubbed “silhouette race cars”, engineers ran wild and created cars that barely rese...

For as legendary a supercar as the Ruf CTR is, you wouldn’t suspect Ruf Automobile to have come from such humble beginnings. The CTR came from Alois Ruf Jr.’s love of Porsche, specifically the 911 model. After years of tuning existing models, Ruf eventually realized his Porsche dream: a twin turbo 911 that could go toe to toe with supercars like the Ferrari F40, the Lamborghini Countach, and th...

You over-simplified the gas compression equation by reducing it to Boyle's law which implies constant temperature. In a rapidly compressed or expanded gas, such as the case in point, there is not time for heat to flow across the walls so the gas eqn (p.v exp n =1) is appropriate where n is the polytropic index probably nearer 1.4 (adiabatic) than 1 (isothermal).

Two things. 1) This reminds me of the cyclone generated inside a Dyson vacuum cleaner or an afterburner. 2) I wonder if it would just be simpler to have a solenoid controlled canister of compressed air connected to the hot side of the turbine. As exhaust gas pressure reduces, open up the air valve to keep it spinning, just hook that valve up to the ECU.

In a standard car, we already have an AC compressor and a negative pressure line... I don't see the problem of adding pneumatic valve train. Even if it needs changing every 50k km , and a small gas compression cylinder ,fuel saves from less power lost for compression might be justified. Maybe Renault will add this to the Clio and Dacia 🤣🤞

Don't forget that too little force when the valve is seated can result in valve bounce as the valve returns to its seat at ever-increasing rates, as the engine rpm is elevated!

I jumped from the stock 18mm rear bar to a 22mm aftermarket and it is crazy now whwn I turn super tight turns. Like my wheels lift off the ground I can can feel it but never see it myself since I am driving n one person told it happened. Idk if that is supposed to happen but the car handles really good and I don’t lose control it doesn’t feel sketchy but that can’t be right, idk what to do it must be normal is what I tell my self nervously when it happens it’s only one of the rear tires that lifts depending on which way I am turning . I drive a 2018 Honda civic si and I swapped out the rear bar to a whiteline 22mm might be 24mm I don’t remember pretty sure it is 22 n upgraded end links non adjustable (accord end links)non adjustable tho but they are beefy pure steel compared to the plastic stock ones they fit perfectly no forcing them in everything lines up smoothly so idk it’s gotta be right? Yeah it normal nothing to worry about mhmm

In fact they don’t go beyond 11000 because of turbo/fuel flow. The pneumatic valves become really a must when the V10 Renault went over the 15000 in 92 and subsequent yrs.

I wonder why they made that design throwback? That modern design don't appear on this video...

And I don't believe the claim of Renault making a 1200hp engine ever! Utter nonsense, unless it was some over boosted test only engine, their race spec twin turbo V6's never went over 700hp, and I have the specs in writing of every single F1 engine ever made, even if it was never raced. BMW made the most powerful F1 turbo engine @ 1400+hp (& a single turbo 4cylinder at that) and the most powerful naturally aspirated engine @ just under a 1000hp from the V10 era, and both times BMW was responsible for getting these engine/era's banned... unfortunately 😢
